The thing people never think about is what its like trying to make new songs, of course the image of easy music comes from the mainstream music today that plays out for the younger generation. However, its not exactly new, its been around ever sense music has started. Remember back in the 90's when N'sync an Backstreet Boys were the latest craze? even that B.S spice girls an Pussy Cat Dolls... truth be known these 'artist' were able to make single albums an raise their millions for songs that barely if even at all meant anything. What people don't really think about is the genuine music, the music musicians have put their own sweat blood an tears to make an album that takes far more time to get out and far more energy to promote to still only have it go so far before its forgotten about.
What I'm getting at is this, when people ask what its like to make music, or why it takes so long to get a new song up, and then when the song does get up its so filled with symbolism that no one actually knows what its even about. Look at Hotel California by The Eagles, in a recent debate in my math class a lot of kids said that the song was written because the song writer got stuck on the top floor of the building an couldn't get out.... RIGHT. The music that is written the way music is supposed to be written will always have symbolism that people hearing the song will misunderstand. Look at the song Stinkfist by TOOL, one member of another band was talking to me and my bass player about what the song meant, if you look it in the plain view then yes that song will only mean that, but listen to the lyrics an understand where Maynerd is coming from an you'll see it can also mean something completely different. This leads into what I define as REAL music and PROPAGANDA music.
Real music is the music that means something, that connects with people the kind of music that gives you flashbacks to your childhood or takes you away from your current position and takes you away to a better place. What I've come to notice about the music people have always turned to and found a higher liking to has always been what i call REAL music. Back in the 90's Guns N' Roses took the image of music and rock and completely flipped it over, they brought whatever they had an nothing more...nothing less and people loved it. Looking at the top charts the record breaking music has always been music that people have poured their own blood into an told a story for exactly what it was with out whining and without giving any BS. Its a part of being that image everyone wants to obtain, being a badass. Being able to tell a story about the things that have happened to you, or how things are behind the music, is exactly what makes the REAL music big. When Ozzy first came to the United States he was playing with Black Sabbath. Of course getting his name and image that hes kept ever sense the point being that when Black Sabbath came to America being something new and original they were the biggest and the baddest around and thats what has locked them into history. From The Beatles with their drugs an long hair to Ozzy and his form of getting the message across, to Guns N' Roses bringing an absolute image to what they are an what they do. This to me is a fraction of what REAL music is.
Propaganda music, however. Simply is the type of music that gets big not by the determination of the band but because they have loads of money and mostly make music because dong writers tell them what to say and when. Sure, it has good rhythm sometime but in truth thats all it has. Whats the feel of the song? where is the emotion backing the song? what the hell is the point of you even going up on stage to entertain us with this?!? Why bring all this ranting up? Simple, on a personal level I have come to understand the pains an ailments that come to heart that goes along with getting attached to the music.
Just recently i have come to a crossroads where i find music, the emotion of, and a personal life all intersect. Last summer when I was with a group known as Sons of Bessemer City (a local band that I pretty much formed from the ground up). We spent almost the whole summer piled in a small room in the basement of my current Bass players house and thats where we lived. We recorded, we formed, we argued, we lit things on fire, and far too many good band stories came from that summer. The issue i have come a cross is finding that when you put yourself into complete isolation leaving the world to go F' its self pretty much you will sooner or later find yourself in the exact situation you put yourself in. However, when in a band your set to go out into this world and entertain...its what you love to do. Issue underlying is that an person of isolation in the middle of a crowed room thinks mentally on a level that no one else in that room understands this almost always leads to regrets. Making a full turn around going back to my main point, the music that you see is never the full story, bands spend months upon months in a 'dungeon' practicing, recording, hating it, remaking it, yelling, crying, fighting, surviving, looking out, looking in, and always over thinking almost every situation that could possibly be horrible for a person to over think. Its funny to tell about, but when your the musician in the position until you have lost all care for the retrospect its more shameful but still the same... its rather shamefully funny.
